A stranger has appeared at the gates of the camp asking for water, claiming to be on our side, but we are yet to know for sure.

UPDATE
The night is spent conducting the traditional rituals and bathing and marking the first soldiers to be sent. The symbols drawn on them are secret, and only known to the soldier, and the scientists who apply them. At dawn there is a final prayer and the men leave. We are now waiting for messengers to bring news.

Thunder clouds are gathering overhead. The sky is black as ink. Soldiers are alarmed to see birds flying from the trees through the night, and animals leaving the woods surrounding the camp.

'All of this', the General says, sweeping his thin arm across the camp and the land, 'will be evaporated. You cannot stop this.'

News that our forces have been abandoned by foreign allies spreads through the camp causing unease. The night is clear and warm. Food has been brought in, but much of it is rancid from the heat, and many troops are too nervous to think of eating.
